The project showcases the exploration of joints created from interlocking pieces of concrete and styrofoam. The use of hot wire cutter to carve a block a styrofoam resulted in a collection of volumes defined by ruled surfaces, the shapes of the surfaces determined by the function of the direction and speed at which the styrofoam was run through the cutter.
The cutting process generated two surfaces from a single piece of styrofoam. These surfaces could be arranged in various ways to create new morphologies. The styrofoam form work was not only used as a mold for the concrete but was also later refurbished as an inlay to the concrete.
This project emphasizes the interplay between form and material. The use of concrete and styrofoam highlights both the contrast between the material properties and the symbiotic relationship between the two of the most ubiquitous construction materials seen around the world.
